The “Cool Things About” Annual Magazine

Overview

The Cool Things About magazine is a “Best of the Best” collection based on the Hippo’s Best Of public vote in Southern New Hampshire. Published annually, it serves as a guide to local favorites in food, services, entertainment, and activities.

Objective

To create a perfect-bound, glossy magazine of moderate length with a more upscale design than the weekly newspaper. The goal was to design a guide that both locals and visitors would keep as a trusted resource for recommendations in Southern New Hampshire.

Approach

Much of the work on the magazine involved adapting existing client advertisements to fit the magazine format and to communicate a more evergreen message to a broader audience. The layout required managing a multi-document book in InDesign, which was edited simultaneously by designers and editors.

The Aeronaut Quarterly Newsletter

Overview

The Aviation Museum is a small, local museum housed in the original terminal of Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. The museum has a passionate membership that receives a quarterly newsletter, The Aeronaut. The newsletter is printed as a saddle-stitched, glossy magazine and mailed to members.

Objective

To efficiently lay out the 12–16 page Aeronaut with minimal rounds of revisions, and to communicate space and graphic needs with museum leadership to complete the project.

Approach

The approach to The Aeronaut is very similar to that used for the Cool Things About magazine, though the process is greatly simplified. I have been updating the design system to create a fresh but still familiar look, including reducing the number of text styles and moving away from ultra-condensed typefaces.

Cocktail Booklet

Overview

The cocktail booklet is a compilation of postcards designed to market the spirit brands represented by Stone Fence Beverage across New England.

Objective

The initial objective was to design individual postcards that could be distributed in liquor stores and handed to bar staff to encourage the ordering and purchase of specific brands. These have since been combined into a recipe booklet featuring high-quality cocktail photography.

Approach

The postcards were designed in accordance with each brand’s specific standards. To work efficiently, the reverse side of the postcards featuring the recipes followed a consistent template.

The Hippo Press

Overview

The Hippo Press is a weekly, free arts and entertainment newspaper serving Southern New Hampshire. It supports and strengthens the local community by providing businesses and organizations a platform to share events and information with both residents and visitors.

Objective

To collaborate with a team of designers, sales representatives, writers, and editors to consistently and efficiently produce a weekly newspaper under tight deadlines, including ad and cover design. To publish the same content on a membership website and manage site maintenance and memberships.

Approach

Out of necessity, it was important to adhere to a limited set of predefined stylistic choices, both to meet weekly deadlines and to work within the constraints of a traditional four-color press. Clear communication, strong file management, and effective project tracking were critical to successfully producing each weekly issue.

Deliverables

  • Weekly newspaper 24-36 pages
  • Assorted ads and marketing collateral
  • Re-packaging print collateral for website and social media updates.

Board Game Rulebooks

Overview

Below is an assortment of rulebooks developed for Tabletop Tycoon. Rulebooks present unique design challenges, as they are often highly illustrated, require detailed diagrams, and include numerous sidebars and callouts.

Objective

To develop a thematically appropriate, highly legible rulebook within the context of a larger, evolving project, while keeping graphics up to date as other components of the game are revised.

Approach

In early versions of the rulebook, I block in diagrams and illustrations while other game components are still being finalized. This helps determine the rulebook’s graphic needs and how well the copy fits across spreads. Once the components are finalized, I replace placeholders with mockups, 3D renders, or game artwork to complete the layout. This not only clarifies gameplay but also adds lore and reinforces the game’s thematic elements.
