Overview
Hayward’s Ice Cream has been a nostalgic fixture in the Southern New Hampshire community and a longtime client of The Hippo Press. Their account was one of the first I worked on when I joined the publication, and it presented a unique challenge: advertising ice cream in the winter as the family-owned Hayward’s business began offering it at their Christmas tree farm. In New England, there is no off-season for ice cream.
Objectives
Designed compelling print advertisements for weekly distribution. Created additional business collateral, including business cards and menus.
Approach
Hayward’s Ice Cream has strong existing branding, which made the advertising approach more straightforward. The primary focus was communicating the latest flavor offerings, operating hours, and reminding longtime locals of the nostalgia associated with visiting Hayward’s.

Print Collateral
Print Advertisement
Hayward’s Ice Cream print advertising focused on reinforcing their existing branding and keeping their presence in the community top of mind, especially during the winter months. It highlighted diet-sensitive options, limited-edition flavors, and kept regular customers informed about new locations and expanded offerings.
Signage
Hayward’s Ice Cream signage primarily focused on highlighting new and existing locations. This included a “Coming Soon” banner for a new store, roadside signs to reinforce proximity to locations, and supplementary signage displayed on The Hippo’s racks inside regional grocery stores.
Business Cards
Business cards reinforced Hayward’s Ice Cream branding while clearly and concisely conveying key information. The same format was also used to distribute limited-edition specials promoting the new location, as well as for the owner’s promotional use.
Promotional Stickers
Promotional stickers were featured on the covers of Hayward’s Ice Cream. They served three purposes: advertising in a high-visibility cover position, directing readers to a larger ad inside the publication for more details, and providing a removable coupon. This approach increased brand visibility and encouraged visits to the ice cream stands.
A New Resturant Location
Menus
A new restaurant location brought updated interior design elements, an expanded menu, and new signage needs. Hayward’s Ice Cream wanted to maintain chalkboard-style signage to reflect the history and local character of their brand, while also presenting a more consistent menu that justified professionally printed signs over hand lettering. Organizing the density and variety of information while maintaining legibility became my primary focus for these menu signs.
Takeout Menu
Hayward’s Ice Cream increased focus on convenience, higher foot traffic, expanded outdoor seating, and the growing prevalence of delivery services led to an investment in paper takeout menus. These were designed to streamline ordering and encourage repeat visits.
